ISRAEL ZANGWILL

MR. R. A. SINGER’S LECTURE PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS Personal recollection of Israel Zangwill, the great Jewish novelist, were given in an address on “Jewish Literature,” by Mr. R. A. Singer at the Lyceum Club last evening. Zangwill, he said, was one of the most brilliant Jewish writers, and his career was a remarkable one. The speaker knew him in boyhood, when he was one of the multitude of exiles from Russia. Zangwill was educated in England, graduating at London University. For a time he was a pupil teacher, but owing to conflict with his headmaster he abandoned teaching and became instead a great novelist. Mr. Singer read “The Sabbath Breaker,” which he said was, in his opinion, among the finest short stories ever written.
