BOOKMAKERS HIT
TREBLES AND DOUBLES (From Our Own Correspondent) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Though officially there is no betting with bookmakers in New Zealand racing people have more than a suspicion that theer were big doubles and trebles laid over the recent welter of racing in the Cathedral City, otherwise Christchurch. And it is said that the layers of these alluring means of making (?) money were severely hit by the results. The double—presuming it is true that there really was one—would be on the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap on the first day. Another direction in which there would be a double would be on the two cups, galloping and trotting. Then the treble would be the New Zealand Cup (galloping), the Stewards’ Handicap and the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Those who might know a little about these matters say that the layers got all the worst of the deal and that the takers made a harvest. One authority goes so far as to say that the layers went into mourning. That is hardly likely to be right, as most of them can stand a loss; it is not often they are asked to suffer one. WHERE THE TROUBLE STARTED The success of Rapier in the New Zealand Cup was the beginning of the trouble. He was a firm favourite in all double and treble business, and home he came. Next to arrive was Eulalie, who was favourite in her leg of the doubles and trebles. This was bad enough, and the report is that after the success of Eulalie the layers announced that they saw no means of escaping from a very bad meeting. Worse was in store for them. Two favourites had landed, but Kohara went out favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and he also won. He was a bad horse with Rapier, and was worse in the trebles. So, for once those favourites of fortune—the bookmakers—were in trouble from the start and were unable to find a way out. Apparently something similar happened in Melbourne during the Melbourne Cup meeting, where the ring, heavily hit, paid out enormous sums to betters. It is well for the investor to have an occasional turn. Otherwise the game could not go on.
