BLACK CAT AND CAR
UNLUCKY MEETING DRIVER ARRESTED INTOXICATION ALLEGED TTILARIOUS laughter, zigzagging, and the noise of a bursting tyre drew a constable’s attention to a motor-car which was pursuing a black cat in Cus- | toms Street near midnight on I November 9. I Raymond Emanuel, a sharebroker, aged 33, whom the police allege was driving the car, was charged at the Police Court to-day with being intoxicated while in charge of a car. A constable, who was on duty in Customs Street, said that hilarious laughter first drew his attention to the car. He then saw the car accelerate and chase a black cat for several yards. It zig-zagged, then a tyre burst, and it skidded a distance, just missing a tram-pole. Witness went over to the car, which was carrying a party of six, and when he asked who was in charge Emaneul came forward. He was intoxicated. “GOOD-LOOKING PAIR" Constable Ross, who arrived later, said that Emanuel told him and his colleague that they were “a pair of good-looking gentlemen,” and asked them to come to his office. Other police witnesses said that Emanuel was under the influence of liquor at the Police Station. Emanuel, in evidence, said that at the time of the accident he was on his way home from a party. He had borrowed the car, and it was in his charge, but the driver was a man named Wedg.ewood, who had since gone to Australia. They had not chased the cat, but instead were trying to dodge it, when the accident occurred.
Occupants of the car said that Emanuel was not the driver, and he was not under the influence of liquor. The case was adjourned until tomorow morning to enable another witness to be called for the defence.
