Markets and Money
A Review for Business Men
ON THE ’CHANGE MARKET IN GOOD TONE TARANAKI OILS WEAKER A bright tone prevails on ’Change with, seemingly, more money available for investment in the better classes of securities. Business is not confined to any special section. Mining continues dull and practically idle, and, though certain scrip receives attention, buyers are mostly well below sellers’ ideas of value. In banks. New Zealands maintain a strong tone, with sellers withdrawn at this morning’s calls. Commercials are active on a firm market. Nationals are weaker. , In shipping. Northern Steams have registered greater activity. Kaiapoi Woollens have improved, and sellers at 9s are supported by buyers a *ln the miscellaneous section Tonson Garlicks are receiving more attention, and after a long silence sellers came on the market this morning at 11s Gd to see buyers improve to 10s 9d. Taranaki Oils are weaker with buyers at 10s 3d and no sales over the period. SALES REGISTERED Yesterday afternoon’s business: On ’Change—Wilsons Cement, 36s 9d. IN THE MARKET PLACE DEARER STRAWBERRIES FIRST OF THE CHERRIES Strawberries were dearer in the marts to-day in spite of the fact that there were large supplies forward. Cherries made their appearance and met with good demand. With the special strawberry sales and increase of local fruit generally a livelier tone is registered in the city fruit and produce marts. - _ Strawberries came forward in iar-,e quantities to-day, but there was an increased demand, and prices firmed od to 6d \ a limited quantity of Grey town strawberries were available this morning, ana these sold in the vicinity of Is od a chip for not the very best quality. Hothouse tomatoes were dull of sale and the market decidedly easier. A fresh shipment of Australian fruit next week is expected to include cherries, and in all probability the first of this season’s plums will also come to hand. The demand for oranges is easier. Bananas are making better money and meeting with a fair demand. In the field and garden produce section ample supplies of most vegetables meet with a ready sale and prices for the most part are unchanged. Eggs and farmers’ butter continue well supplied, with prices at late rates.
