CLOUDBURST’S HAVOC
DELUGE AT TE KUITI MUCH DAMAGE DONE (From Our Own Correspondent) TE KUITI, Thursday. During a torrential downpour of rain at Te Kuiti yesterday, a cloudburst occurred in the Bonny Glen district causing considerable damage to roads and gardens in that locality. The most serious damage occurred on the farm property of Mr. G. Daniel, where a concrete dam and pump used for a domestic water-supply, situated in a valley below the house, was washed out. Trees and ferns were carried into the dam, and 60ft. of piping leading to the pump was bent and twisted. So great was the rush of water that part of the face of the hillside was washed away. Owing to the inability of culverts to cope with the storm-water, several bad scours occurred on the roads. One householder living on the hill had the unpleasant experience of witnessing the diverted water rushing in at the back door of his residence and running out again at the front door. Several gardens were completely ruined, the whole of the surface soil being carried away. According to residents in this locality the roar of the water could be heard a considerable distance away. Other portions of the town escaped lightly.
