THE FINAL TRIBUTE
LATE MR. J. W. POYNTON
IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL The final tribute to Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., was paid yesterday afternoon at the funeral, which left his residence, Epsom Avenue, for Waikumete Cemetery at two o’clock. The pall-bearers were: Superintendent Wohlmann, Mr. J. B. Johnston, president of the Law Society, Mr. H. Wright, representing Auckland horticulturists, Mr. A. J. Stratford, vice president of the New Zealand Federation of Justices, Mr. J. H. Fray, representing Auckland Justices, and Mr. TI. Stebbing, representing the Young Citizens’ League.
A service was conducted first at Mr. Boynton’s home by the Rev. J. Lamb Harvey, and another short but impressive service was held at the crematorium. The minister said that Mr. Boynton had served both community and State with faithfulness and efficiency.
“Such men as he are a boon to any community,” said the speaker. “They help to keep its soul alive, and in these materialistic times, nothing is more needed than that.”
Among those present were Mr. E. C. Cutten, Mr. F. K. Hunt, and Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.’s, Chief-Detective J. Cummings and Senior-Detective A. Hammond, Mr. A. R. Coad, of Wellington, representing the Public Trustee, Mr. A. Rosser, president of the Auckland Justices of the Beace Association, Messrs. W. Casey, J. Grace, E. Leydon and G. Lethaby, members of the Auckland Licensing Committee, Mr. Carroll, representing the Magistrates’ Court, Police Sub-Inspector Lewin, representatives of the legal profession, and many Mr. Boynton’s friends.
