PAYMENT BY RESULTS
SYSTEM ADVOCATED BY LABOUR MAN RAISING LIVING STANDARD By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.30 a.m. BRISBANE, To-day. Mr, W. N. Gillies, a member of the Board of Trade and Arbitration, and a former Labour Premier, speaking on an application before the board, advocated a system of payment by results as a means of raising the standard of living. He said this system was really one worthy of consideration. So far as wages were concerned, they were at a dead end. He thought it was due to workers that consideration should be given to any system whereby the standard of living could be improved. Too much was expected from wage tribunals. They could not produce wealth and neither could Parliament, nor the Press produce wealth. Wealth was only produced by the workers, but they could not take more out of an industry than was put into it, and if they awarded rates which were too high, the inevitable result was unemployment, and possibly an increased cost of living.—A. and N.Z.
