FINES FOR TEACHERS
PROTEST BY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute met this evening to consider the Education Amendment Bill now before Parliament. Strong exception was taken to the clause in the Bill providing for the imposition of a fine up to £lO on any teacher guilty of wilful disobedient; of any lawful command or of neglect of duty, such fine to be deducted from the teacher’s salary. It was considered that this clausecast an unnecessary reflection upon the teaching service as a whole and in view of the high esteem in which the profession was held by the public the implied suggestion that it was necessary to discipline its members by a system of fines was quite uncalled for. There was already available adequate and effective means of safeguarding the efficiency and good conduct of the service. It was decided to enter a strong protest against a proposal, which in its implications, would tend to lower the prestige of the profession in th* eyes of the public.
