ENEMY OF RAGWORT
TRIAL IN NEW ZEALAND HUNGRY CATERPILLARS M By Cabin. —Press Association.—Copyriyht CANBERRA, Tuesday. Senator McLachlan announced that arrangements had been made by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to supply Dr. R. J. Tillyard, of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, New Zealand, with a large number of caterpillars of the moth momoeosoma, a natural enemy of ragwort, .for testing. Preliminary investigations carried out by the council’s entomologist had demonstrated convincingly that these insects were capable of destroying ragwort plants in a week or so. Should starvation tests prove satisfactory, it is expected that these caterpillars will assist materially in bring ing the weed under control in New Zealand and possibly in Tasmania, where several districts are infected.— A. and N.Z.
