CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
AUCKLAND ARRANGEMENTS EMPLOYERS’ DECISION Auckland retail shops win keep to their usual late night on Friday during the Christmas and New Year season, and will close for the usual half-day on Saturday. They will reopen on the following Wednesday. This course of action was decided on at a meeting of the Auckland Retail Shopkeepers’ Association this morning, when all trades affected were represented. According to the Act, Saturday night could be observed as a late night in each case, and a half day allowed during the week, but consideration for their employees, who will be thus given three complete days’ holiday on both occasions, has been the guidihg motive for this arrangement.
On Friday, December 23 and 30, the shops will be kept open until 10 o’clock. The only exception to this will be the butchers, who cannot remain open except by agreement with the union. On the Saturdays the shops will close as usual. According to the general shop assistants’ award, most shops are closing at 12.15 p.m., grocers at 12.30 and butchers at 12. At Hamilton a different arrangement has been made. There the long night at Christmas will he on Christmas Eve with the half day on Wednesday, December 21. The New Year holidays will be the same as those of Auckland. Thames intends to follow a similar procedure, and it is thought by the officials of the association that most country towns will do likewise.
