NOTES AND COMMENTS PACERS FOR EPSOM POINTS WORTH NOTING WITH operations under way this week-end at Alexandra Park, the light harness loving public will have plenty to occupy its attention and will find it of interest to study the form of various candidates engaged. A batch of pacers are dealt with in the following notes. Till We Meet Again Those who were present at Alexandra Park on the second day of the June fixture will remember the wonderful finish put in by Loch Moigh when he beat all but the winner. Reremai, whom he was conceding 24 yards. Both pacers are on the same mark in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday and should provide a stirring finish. A Message From Mars The consistent Mars who last season put up some attractive performances, is another engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap from the same peg as Loch Moigh and Reremai. Jones’s gelding, if started, will add interest to the event and is sure to keep #the other pair busy. Equal to 12 Furlongs Lad’s Hope, who figures in the Stewards Handicap on 12 yards, is one that track watchers are selecting to give the merry-makers mentioned a big shock on Saturday. The chestnut is in good condition and should certainlv prove equal to running out a solid 12 furlongs.
Due Time for Daytime Laytime, the Nelson Bingen gelding, has been expected to do things of late and his time may be at hand. Good judges aver the chestnut is one of the most promising pacers in his class at present in commission and off the end of a 3.30 mile and a-half he should have a royal show. Wh|t Mood Will Luvan Be In? What event will Luvan start in? is a question often asked just now. Unless the ex-Australian mare improves on her recent displays it should not matter much in which race she goes to the post. Of course, she may have had the “bee” removed from her “bonnet,” in which case Luvan would be one to be reckoned with. Not Over Worked The Antonio —Charlie’s Aunt gelding Scandal was not over raced last season, being started on only five occasions. In his first outing McMillan’s charge ran third to Money Spider and Marshal Neil. The previous year he was three times in the money, twice in saddle heats. Scandal is on the end of the saddle race on Saturday. Back to the Old Home Holly Boy, who is* back at Mangere under S. August’s care, is working in a style that suggests he has come along all right since racing at the Auckland meeting. He was hustled over a mile on the grass track during the weekend and while the time recorded was not sensational the work-out was a pleasing one. The Otahuhu grass circuit is not conducive to record breaking. Mangere Mare Off The Front The Gold Bell mare Golden Grattan is one of those off the front of ti e Mangere Handicap that will keep the opposition busy and make it difficult for any of those in the background l r > get into the picture. When stepped out in the unhoppled heat last month the Mangere-owned mare finished third. It was a ten-furlong flutter she won at Cambridge last May. Jean May Break The Spell Who said Jean McElwvn? —probably everyone. This natty filly has been rather unlucky so far, but it’s a long lane that has no turning. At Hut; Park September fixture Jean was in big demand, but succumbed to Daphne de Oro, who has since cleaned up both Lerby contests. The Nelson Bingen filly was in receipt of 48 yards, but to get second she improved her time about 13 second. Her next essay was at Ashburton, where she was beaten for the purse by Lady Matchlight. who has since won a good heat at GreymouthJean McElwyn may break the speh at Alexandra Park this week.
