DR. FRANK CRANE’S DAILY EDITORIAL HONESTY (Copyright , 1927) T E. B. MAXWELL a garage-keeper, has recently had impressed upon him the honesty of most men. Three years ago Mr. Maxwell was serving a chance customer and hung his tyre gauge on a ring on the door of the car. The driver drove away and took the gauge. Recently, after three years, this customer stopped in Maxwell’s garage again and returned the gauge, telling where he had found it. He had intended to return it sooner, but could not remember the garage. This illustrates the fact that honesty is a commoner trait than supposed. David, the psalmist, alleges that he said in his haste, “All men are liars.” David was mistaken. Most men are honest. A postmaster once told me that if the average man made a mistake of two cents at the stamp window, he would walk a block or two back to rectify it. He would rather take all that trouble than to be bothered with the consciousness that he had swindled somebody. I once got some money at a bank window and when stepping aside to count it I found that the clerk had given me ten dollars too much. I said to him, “You have made a mistake in giving me my money.” “We do not rectify mistakes once they are made at the window. Please step aside,” said the clerk. “But the mistake was in my favour. You have given me ten dollars too much,” I said. That was different, and the clerk accommodatingly counted the money and found that he had been mistaken. Some people will cheat by picking up a newspaper and not placing the money on the stand if the dealer is not there. Some people will try to cheat the railroad company and be delighted when the conductor overlooks them. But most people are honest, as the news dealer testifies when he leaves his pile of papers unguarded and trusts people to leave the money when they take a paper. Whether it be a moral sense or the discomfort of having done a wrong deed or the fear of being found out, the fact is that the average man finds it more comfortable to go along without cheating. The card cheat is a rare bird and the clerk who taps the till is the exception contrary to the prevailing opinion. Most people have a conviction that they are going to get along better if 'they keep in harmony with the universe. The fact that the stars in their courses fight against the wicked may be a mere superstition, but we don’t ! like to take chances, i
