NURSING HOME FIRE
THREE ROOMS DESTROYED A house at 709 Manukau Road, used as a nursing home by Nurse E. Crossan, was badly damaged by fire shortly after 2 a.m. yesterday. There was no one in the house at the time. There have lately been three patients with Nurse Crossan, but two left on Friday and the other on Saturday. She herself had gone to Birkenhead to spend the week-end, and it was not until late yesterday that she heard of the fire. People in a near-by house in Beckenham Avenue gave the alarm and removed two motor vans from an adjoining shed. When the Mount Roskill Brigade arrived leads of hose were played on the back portion of the buikling, which was blazing fiercely. Three rooms were destroyed, and the remaining four damaged by smoke and water before the flames were under control. The fire appears to have broken out in the rear of the building. The house was insured for £9OO in the Alliance Insurance Office. The contents were insured for £75 in the State Insurance Office and for £2OO with the South British Company. Nurse Crossan lost all her nursing and household equipment.
