RUMANIAN THRONE

SUPPORTER OF CAROL TRIED WITNESSES ABSENT By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. BUCHAREST. Thursday. The trial by court-martial of M. Manoilescu, formerly Rumanian Un-der-Secretary of Finance, for conveying letters from Prince Carol to Bucharest, was opened to-day in a small room at a barracks. Strong measures were taken to prevent disorder. Only four witnesses were present out of 37 who had been summoned. The court agreed to issue fresh summonses to compel the attendance of the remainder. M. Manoilescu’s counsel disputed the court’s competency on the ground that the proclamation of a state of siege was illegal. By a majority of three to two the court over-ruled the objection. The proceedings were then adjourned.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
