“DRIVE” BEGINS

UNEMPLOYMENT FUND . SUCCESSFUL OPENING FLOWERS ON FRIDAY The drive to raise an additional £«»000 for the relief of unemployed commenced well in Auckland this morning. The drive is being directed from the Town Hall by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, Mr. P. J. Crump, chairman of the special citizens’ committee co-opted by the Mayor, and Mr. Gwilliam, of the City Council staff. The army of collectors is a numerous ; one, and is distinguished by a white badge, with the city coat of arms, and the dates November 9 to 12, with other inscriptions. These badges will only ; be official during the four-day appeal. For the purposes of the canvass the business area has been divided into 22 blocks, and the residential area into 33 blocks. In the business area the collectors will work for three days, and a large body of lady collectors will make their appeal in the residential area on Saturday morning. At Point Chevalier and Avondale, however, the lady collectors will start earlier. Mr. Crump said this morning that everything was going very well. On Friday the big effort will be centred in Civic Square, when a flower sale will be held. Any one who can provide flowers or anything of the nature is asked to deliver them to Civic Square from 7.30 a.m. onwards. An exhibition of flowers and pot plants will be given, and the display will then be sold, either on the Civic Square or in Queen Street. Donors who are unable to deliver flowers or plants should notify the Town Hall and they will be called for. Offers of more cars for Saturday morning to assist the lady collectors between 8 a.m. and noon should be reported at the Town Hall.
