With Bat and Ball

A Cricket Causerie

One member of the Management Committee of the A.C.A. evidently thinks that cricket is a powerful force in the life of the people. Last evening he suggested that if the committee made a bold front they might be able to make the Auckland Racing Club cave in and grant them the use of the Ellerslie racecourse. Good luck to their efforts. v ~

Members of teams of all grades travelling to Papatoetoe on Saturday are requested to catch the 1.13 pan. train from Auckland.

Messrs. E. H. Bowley and 11. IX Gillespie leave Auckland by the Limited this evening to take part in the New Zealand v. The Rest match, commencing at Wellington on Friday.

Schnauer Does Well Playing his first season’s cricket with a senior club, ,L. Schnauer, the exAuckland Grammar School captain was Varsity’s top scorer in both innings of their match against Y.M.C.A. With 37 to his credit in the first strike and 50 not out in his second, he was the only bat among the students to survive the bowling of Bowley and Co. Schnauer is yet anotlier good example of the fine solid type of cricketer the. Auckland secondary schools are turning out.

Filling Rountree’s Place It looks as though the selectors will have no easy task filling R. W. Rountree’s place behind the sticks in Auckland’s 1928 cricket reps. Kelly, the Varsity keepr, showed up in a brilliant manner on Saturday week as the veteran’s likely successor, but by his performance last Saturday, W. Wheeler, the Ponsonby custodian, bids fair to make strong claims for the position also. Saturday was not a day of prolific scoring, certainly, but Wheeler stumped four men and allowed only one bye to be scored against him all afternoon, in a matteruof two hundred runs.

Footballer-Cricketer V. C. Butler, the Eden colt, shines both as a Rugby footballer and a cricketer, so much so in fact that it is hard to say which

of these national sports he excells at most. “Vic.” is a Mt Albert Grammar School old boy and earned the dual distinction of representing his province in both the summer and winter sport the year after he left the secondary school. He was a likely All Black until an attack of

mumps laid him low, and at the same time it must be said that he is one of the most promising all-round cricketers in Auckland at the present time. * * *

A Promising Edenite G. L. Weir’s solid stand was one of the deciding factors in Eden’s win against Shore on Saturday. But although the Eden colt is essentially of a solid rather than a brilliant nature with the bat, he is a prolific scorer. Captaining Mount Albert Grammar School last year he proved his worth as the best secondary school bat in Auckland, and played for the provincial junior reps, while still at school. Eden has drawn its strength from the second-

Dacre. Dacre is not too well, and it is very doubtful if be will " appear for Shore for some little time to come, and he narrowly escaped a stay in hospital while in Sydney. He played throughout the tour of the New Zealanders with all

that dash and aggressiveness which

were all in the club a few years ago when it won the championship, and Ces Badeley and Len Right on have also played for Parnell. Nicholls can still weild a useful bat for Petone in Wellington * cricket, and Righton is still with

ary schools, Butler, G. L. Weir, ant A. F. Weir being from Mount Alber Grammar, while McCarthy is from thmain school.

Alcott Resting His Foot During the meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Cricket Association last evening, Mr. E. C. Beale rang up

from Wellington and reported that C.,C. Dacre was on lis way to Auckland on the Limited. Alcott’s foot appears to be giving him some trouble, and he is resting in prepa ration for the New Zealand v. The Rest match. Mills is quite fit and well for the big match. Mr. Beale said that

the team was given a wonderful reception on its arrival at Wellington by the R.M.S. Tahiti.

Proved Their Worth By reason of its stand against the Ponsonby eleven, the United Suburbs Club has proved its wbrtli, and dispelled all fears that it would be a little out of place in the A.C.A.’s senior grade. The club was formed in 1924. and up till this season has played under the Suburban Association. It is true Ponsonby is a long way from being the strongest team the men from the suburbs will meet, but never the less it must be admitted that the Ponies had their share of luck to win the game after two disastrous batting collapses. The newcomers are strong in batting and fielding and with an improvement in their bowling they have no reason to fear even the best team.

“Ces** Dacre Returns Auckland’s cricket idol, * Ces” Dacre, returned to Auckland this mormng by the Limited accompanied by Mrs.

has characterised his batting in Auckland, and fairly captured the English public with his displays. He played some innings which according to Home critics did not suffer when compared with the palmy days of Gilbert Jessop and the immortal Victor Trumper. To the Last Man The strength of the Parnell batting was well exemplified against Grafton, for although Parnell did not manage to win, some of the batsmen well down on the list came to light in great style after an unpromising start by the earlier batsmen. Macallan is a good man to watch when he gets into his stride, and he was well supported bv Hay and Goodsir when he was at the wickets. “All Blacks” in Cricket Mention in THE SUN of rep. footballers, who are playing senion cricket, has resulted in the writer’s attention having been drawn to a remarkable coincidence in connection with the Parnell Club. Since the war five All Blacks have played for Parnell. Vic Badeley, Reg. Sheen and Mark Nicholls

the old club, but Vic. Badeley the others have given the game best. AUCKLAND CRICKET ASSN. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Cricket Association held last evening received a letter from the. secretary of the Mount Albert Grammar School Cricket Club advising that R. Q. Bush, playing against the Auckland Grammar B team on October 29, scored the first century of the season, and was therefore entitled to Mr. Mat-

thews’s bat. It was decided to forward the letter to Mr. Matthews. Some discussion followed the receipi of a letter from the Wellington Cricket Association regarding th ? hours of play in Plunket Shield matches. Wellington recommended that play commence at noon and end at 7, with a limit of four days for play. Mr. J. Watts thought that full advantage should be taken of daylightsaving and he saw no reason for commencing ploy at 12 instead of at 11. Finally it was decided to instruct the committee’s delegates to the New Zealand C.A. meeting to favour th • early start.
