HELP FOR MINING A well-known Paeroa youth uu arrested on Saturday on a charge of alleged theft of a registered letter, th* - property of his employer, a local busness man. It is thought that other charges of theft will be brout ; against him whe n the case is heard or. Monday next. The Thames Valley Power Board aireceived a claim for the loss of a cow and a horse, which are alleged to hive died through eating paint used by u» board. At the Ohinemuri County Councui meeting on Thursday, two applications for financial assistance were - brougt: forward. Money was required for developing goldmining at Karangahake. Mr. W. F. D. McWilliams, of Waifei, who has applied for 200 acres for mining at Karangahake. has also mid* application to the Minister of Mines for a subsidy for prospecting and assisting in driving a cross-cut in virgin ground. It is the intention of Mr. McWilliams to do 250 feet of crosscutting and sink a prospecting shaft. Ho has £SOO, and it is hoped the Goternment will come to the rescue and help. He is determined and satisfied that the venture will meet with success. Karangahake is by no means worked out, but, like Thames, ther* is more gold left there than has ever been taken out. The chairman said: There you are: if we have not any money we can »r least recommend the application to th* Mines Department. The Imperial Goldmining Coir.panr also applied for assistance for Karargahake prospecting The counr! recommended both applications to the proper quarter. Mr. W. E. Ward, who has been postmaster at Paeroa for a considerable time, is to retire at the end o! th* month. He has served 40 years with the department.
