Tennis Courts Are Active

ALL CLUBS OPENED LAWNS IN FINE CONDITION Tennis came into its own in -Auckland on Saturday, every grass, asphalt, and chip court club being open for play. Three city clubs opened the season and the Franklin Lawn Tennis Association started its competitions. Parnell Club The Parnell lawns were in splendid order for the official opening of the Tennis Club this afternoon. The president, Colonel W. Preston Stevenson, welcomed visitors and new members. At an extraordinary meeting of the club during the afternoon the club decided to become incorporated in order to have grounds for action against defaulting members. A presentation was made to the president’s daughter. Miss Joyce Preston Stevenson, who is to be married shortly. Mr. W. Pavitt, vice-president, congratulated Miss Stevenson on the happy event and expressed the club’s appreciation for the way she had acted as hostess at many of the club's opening ceremonies. Mr. Pavitt also said that the condition of the lawns reflected great credit on the work of the president. Miss Stevenson was presented with a case of fish knives and forks and a cut-glass jug. Mr. L. Roberts replied on behalf of Miss Stevenson

Eden and Epsom Club The Eden and Epsom Lawn Tennis Club held its opening on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr. N. A. Campbell welcomed the new members and visitors, and referred to the excellent condition of the courts, for which the thanks of the club were due to Mr. A. Iv. Turner, the ground superintendent. Mr. Campbell extended a welcome to Mr. E. Hickson, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. He said a record season was anticipated, in view of daylingt saving being in force, and mentioned that the present season was the forty-first in the history of the club. During the afternoon a progressive tournament was held, the winners being Miss Newton and -V. W. ir’irn.

Mount Albert Club At the opening of Mount Albert Club's lawns, the Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, congratulated club on the picturesque appearance of the grounds, and thanked Mr. A. C. Caughey for presenting a challenge cup for competition among the men, and Mr. S. F. Woodroffe, president of -the club, for a challenge bowl for the ladies. Other speakers included Mr. E. Hickson, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, the Hon. Geo. Fowlds and Mr. S. F. Woodroffe. Mr. Hickson made special reference to the good work of the club’s delegates to the association, Messrs. C. Ellis and Burton.' Mr. Woodroffe thanked Mr. Kerr-Hislop for past services, and congratulated the club on having secured Mr. Campbell as his successor.

Franklin Matches (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, To-day. Play in the Franklin Lawn Tennis Association’s competition started on Saturday. Results were as follow: A Grade. —Zone X: Tuakau Central, 11 sets, beat Tuakau Domain, 3. Zone 2: Buckland, 7, beat Pukekohe East, 7, this match being decided on games: Pukekohe 1., S, beat Pukekohe 11., 6. Zone 3: Waiuku, 8, beat Mauku, 6; Aka Aka. 14, beat Patumahoe, 0. B Grade. —Zone 1: Onewhero, 7, beat Bombay, 6; Tuakau Domain, 7, beat Tuakau Central, 7, this match being decided on games. Zone 2: Pukekohe Hill, 10, beat Buckland, 4; West End, 8, beat Pukekohe, 6. Zone 3: Aka Aka, 7, beat Patumahoe, 7, this match being decided on games; Waiuku beat Mauku.

Rotorua Club (From Our Own Correspondent) ROTORUA, To-day. At the opening of the Rotorua Tennis Club on Saturday, Dr. Hay said that for the first time in the history of the club they had been able to make satisfactory arrangements with the Tourist Department to have the use of certain lawns at a flat rate. The effect of this arrangement would be that they would now be able to carry on like ordinary club. He predicted that more interest would be taken in club matters and that there would be more interest in the season’s play. The games for the afternoon resulted as follows:—Women’s progressive: Miss D. Griffiths: men’s progressive, L. J. Brooker.

Morrinsville Club (From Our Own Correspondent) MORRINSVILLE, To-day. As there are not enough clubs in the district to form a sub-association; the Morrinsville Tennis Club turned down the suggestion. November 19 was fixed as the date fro a match with the Hamilton Club, at Morrinsville.

Waikato Association (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Embracing the whole of the Waikato and King Country, the Waikato Lawn Tennis Association has now a membership of 63 clubs and 2,639 players. The North Island championships will be played at Hamilton at Easter. It is proposed to hold Waikato championships during Christmas week and a tournament on Anniversary Day.
