WHANGAREI ROWING

OPENING DAY’S RESULTS (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Sunday. There was a good turn out at the opening of the Whangarei Rowing Club’s season on Saturday, when the president, Mr. A. D. Jack, sent the scullers away. The president predicted a good season on the water, as there was plenty of promising material. He mentioned that in previous years big crowds had taken to the boats in the* beginning, but had faded away early because it had not always been realised that such a strenuous pastime required training. The president hoped the club would quickly regain its former status at regattas that had been lost in recent years. Several four-oar events were rowed over a half-mile course, eight crews competing. A light nor’westerly was blowing, but the water was comfortable. Mr. J. Mason was the starter. Results: J. Tierney (s), Waterman, Storey and Parkins defeated N. Webber (s), McKenzie, Chitford and Finlayson by two lengths. M. Sherriff (s), Hall, Clark and Dean defeated Cotton (s), Birch, Brett and Mann by two lengths. G. Dent (s), Peacock, Letford and Finlayson defeated V. Macken (s), Jackson, Hughes and Millington by 1* lengths. Mclnerney (s), Webber, Tucker and McLennan defeated McCauldron (s), Dent, Bevington and Reynolds by three-quarters of a length. Semi-Finals. —Tierney defeated Sherriff, the latter stroke breaking his rigger just after Tierney’s No. 2 had lost his seat. Tierney had lost several lengths, but was quickly making .up his leeway when Sherriff's mishap put his boat out of the race. Dent defeated Mclnerney by half a length after a strongly rowed race. Final. —Tierney defeated Dent by a length, being aided by Butt, the cox, who negotiated the outside course cleverly. The single sculls were also out for practice. Afternoon tea was provided by the i ladies.
