SELF-GOVERNING FOR SIXTY YEARS

DEVONPORT’S RECORD PRESENTATION OF PARCHMENT Devonport Borough Council was ' much interested to receive last night from Mr. Selwyn Mays the original parchment embodying the first petition to have Devonport created a borough. The document was passed from hand to hand and the names attached, 112 in all, were eagerly scanned. It was resolved to thank Mr. Mays for his action. A letter urging the borough to carefully preserve the parchment was received from Mr. T. Walsh, who pointed out that while the borough existed from ISS6 the district had fact been self-governing since 1867, when it was gazetted the Flagstaff Highway District; as this was the diamond jubilee year of the grant of selfgovernment possibly some suitable function could be organised to mark the fact. The Mayor, Mr. Aldridge: It is something to know that we have been our own governors for 60 years and have not gone to the bad yet. It was resolved to depute Messrs. Browne and Ellisdon to act with the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce and the North Shore Expansion League to promote some function to mark the jubilee year. Mr. Hislop: Now, if we could make it a half-rate year the public would appreciate it.
