RESTORING ST. PAUL’S

CRYPT PIERS COMPLETED FOUR MORE YEARS’ WORK

By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyi'ight. LONDON, Tuesday. After three years of constant work and utilising the funds subscribed by people in all parts of the Empire, the restoration of the piers in the crypt of St. Paul’s Cathedral has been completed. i First the interior pillars were grouted, steel bars were inserted, and then cement was pumped in at high pressure. This converted the pillars into solid blocks of reinforced concrete. Many of the iron tie-bars linking the piers»with the bastions which Sir Christopher Wren inserted in the original structure were found to be broken. These have been replaced with steel tie-bars which will stand a strain of 600 tons. The engineers are now working upon the columns which support the dome. This work will occupy another four years.—A. and N.Z.
