NEW WATER METERS
DEVONPORT’S SCHEME CONSUMERS TO PAY At last evening’s meeting, the Devonport Borough Council resolved to put into force as soon as possible a scheme for installing new water-meters in the borough. A special by-law was adopted, subject to confirmation at a meeting on November 30, which provides that meters are to be supplied and installed by the council only, at the expense of the consumer, who is to be responsible for the protection and repair of the meter. The town clerk reported that the estimated cost of supplying and installing the 2,000 meters would be *£7,000. The half-inch meters would be the size us§d in most places and would be sold for £ 3 10s cash or £ 4 on terms spread aver eight years; threequarter-inch meters would cost £1 more. He estimated that 25 per cent, of the consumers would pay cash. The water account has a credit of £1,500 this year, partly owing to the fact that the North Shore. Water Board did not make a levy. The clerk considered that the council would recoup the capital outlay by March, 1931. The expected saving* in the cost of pumping under the new electrified scheme might allow of a reduction in the water charges.
