Cricket Surprise
COUNTY’S “PRO.” CAPTAIN VIEWS OF LORD HAWKE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.22 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. X SENSATION has been caused in the cricket world by the action of the Yorkshire County Club in appointing Herbert Sutcliffe the county captain. Sutcliffe remains professional. “Possibly my old friend Jack Hobbs will laugh and say I’ve gone back on my opinion regarding professional captains,” said Lord Hawke, president of the club, immediately after Sutcliffe’s election; ‘‘but I am talking of captains of All-England teams, not of Yorkshire, which is a different matter. I am loyal to my committee, and don’t dare to pass a personal opinion on the selection of a professional as captain.” The committee approached Sutcliffe prior to his sailing for South Africa, and it is understood that he agreed to accept the captaincy. His was the sole name submitted to the committee. —A. and N.Z. A London cablegram of October 24 read as follows:—Although Lord Hawke, the president of the Yorkshire Club, describes as rubbish the report that Sutcliffe was asked to captain the team in succession to Major A. W. Lupton, it is known that the county selection committee began negotiations with Sutcliffe early , last season, and it is expected that their recommendation that he be captain will come before the meeting of the Yorkshire County Committee on November 2. when the reconstitution of the team will be considered. Sutcliffe was promised a benefit in 1929, but he will lose this if he becomes an amateur. Hobbs refused to treat the question seriously. He said: “Sutcliffe to captain Yorkshire! Don’t make me laugh. You know what Lord Hawke said about professional captains.”
