youths rob empty houses REMANDED ~FOR SENTENCE T'WO youths, who have been out J- of work for some months, found a profitable method of filling empty coffers, but it brought them to the Police Court dock to-day. The accused were William James Smith, aged 23, and Claude Fox, aged 20. They pleaded guilty to five charges of stealing lead piping valued at £l6 13s. Smith also pleaded guilty to four charges of stealing lead valued at £ls 17s. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused stole the lead from a number of empty houses. Both had been out of work for the past few months and Smith began his thefts in May, and Fox began in September. Mr. Rice, who appeared for Fox, said that Smith was the “master mind” in the thefts, and Fox had only made 15s out of the transactions.
The Rev. Jasper Calder, in speaking for Smith, said that the . thefts were the direct result of unemployment.
The magistrate, Mr. E. Page, remanded accused to appear for sentence to-morrow.
