WITH THE SEA SCOUTS

. LU joy able Labour Day week-end cruise, although tlie weather marred the outing to some extent The two boats left the dockyard about 3.3‘> p.m. on Saturday afternoon en route for Beacli Haven. When otf! . • . . boats proceeded under oars. This occasioned some delay and the tide turned before the boats had reached their destination. With the tide against them, rowing was made doubly hard, and it was nearly a quaretr to eight when tile boats were berthed. On account of the lateness of the hour it was decided not to pitch the tents but to put in the night in the wharf shed. Some of the older boys attended a dance in the~Birkdale I-fall during the evening. Next morning the boats were squared up and tents were pitched for the rest of the week-end. Shortly after these preparations the rain commenced, and all hands gathered in the tents for a sing-song to the accompaniment of a ukulele and a pair of castenets. When the weather cleared slightly in the afternoon, parties of boys scattered themselves over the countryside to explore, arriving home in time for tea. An uneventful night was passed, and next morning all hands were put to work clearing hailstones out of the boats. On the return trip home a fine run was experienced, the boats making town in an hour. After the tents were put ashore, both boats set out for a harbour sail before returning to the dock. Mr. R. Iverson was in charge of the camp, with Mr. R. Flaselden as first mate. The following ratings attended camp:—Chief petty officer. A. Tipping: chief yeoman of signals, J. Haselder? : chief petty officer. H. Mutch; chief petty officer. R. Daverne; leading seaman, R. Macpherson; able seamen, Newell, Lars- - Hersland; signalmen, Bell, W. Stevens, G. Stevens, Mortimer: writer. M. R. Cardon; ordinary seamen. R. Godden. H. Godden, George Hall. Farquhar. Rice. The camp was very up-to-date, being electrically lit throughout with a storage battery taken away for the purpose. C.P.O. Tipping was in charge of the lighting. —PILOT.
