WOMAN’S CRIME THE ISLAND—OR GAOL TARINK was said to be the cause of the downfall of Elizabeth Margaret Collings, aged 41, who appeared at the Police Court today. She pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £1 2s 6d, the property of Jessie Smith, Senior-Sergeant McCarthy said that accused had gone into a shop, and seeing it unattended, went behind the counter and robbed the till. She was caught red-handed. Major Annie Gordon said that drink was the cause of all accused’s trouble. “She wouldn’t touch a pin when she is sober,” added the major. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: She either gets a month’s hard labour, or goes to Pakatoa for 12 months. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on condition that she goes to the Island.
