LOANS FOR ABATTOIRS
AUTHORITY GIVEN COUNCILS (THE SUN’S ’Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Municipalities will be empowered by the Slaughtering and Inspection Amendment Bill, introduced into the House of Representatives by Governor- , General's message this evening, to : carry out extensions and renewals to abattoirs without first taking a poll of I ratepayers. The Minister of Agriculture, the
Hon. O. J. Hawken, explained that, although municipalities had power to erect abattoirs without first taking a poll, extensions or renewals were not provided for in the same manner, and the Bill sought to correct that by enabling loqal authorities to raise special loans. The Bill also deals with abattoir competition, provision being made for the payment of fees in respect of meat sold in an abattoir district which ras come from stock slaughtered in another abattoir. In no case are fees to be- less than those payable for the of abattoirs exclusive of the cost of slaughtering had the stock been slaughtered there.
