TEN CHAINS OF MUD

Sir, — Can you tell mo any way, now, to get through safely to Helensville by road? The bridge at Swanson is being rebuilt, and there is only a temporary structure there, and that, after the recent rains and washout, is about impossible to get over (with a whole skin or car). The only other way I know is by Lincoln Road, which is all right in fine weather except for the unrolled metal one has to cross. At one place about ten chains in length still remains clay, and, as experienced by many motorists on Monday last, is a real trap. There were - many cars field up there, and only for the timely help given by motorists who had crossed this part earlier in the day, many travellers would have been in a £>orry plight. It was simply a sea of mud, and the cars slipped around in every direction. As one who is forced to make this trip each week for business, I should like to know if anything is to be done in the near future. Surely that small piece of road could be finished off? Then an all-metal road, right through, would be offered motorists. UNFORTUNATE GROWER. The two roads to Helensville are the ones mentioned by the correspondent, and the approaches to the Swanson Bridge are admittedly very bad. Most traffic is now proceeding via the Lincoln road, and the Waitemata County engineer states that the metalling of the ten chains of clay is to be proceeded with almost immediately.—Ed., THE SUN.
