The prize has been awarded to Miss Ooha Burton for the following article: THE GREATEST TYRANT! The World's Greatest Tyrant! Surely an unenviable reputation to possess! Who can he be? A mental glance through the more or less remembered pages of history suggests various names. Which is correct? Not one of these. The despot rejoicing in the power to enslave both men and women is no mere male, but that awesome impersonality yclept Dame Fashion. We humbly bow our heads beneath her power supreme, recognising, nolens volens, the futility of insurrection. "Women are slaves to fashion” is the gospel according to most men (usually uttered with good-humoured contempt), quite ignoring the fact that they themselves are under the thumb of this imperious lady. Is there not undeniable daily evidence of this? A few years ago fashion decreed that men should walk the streets hatless, consequently, in scorching sun or bitter wind, they meekly obeyed. Do we see hatless men to-day? No, if one is sulticiently brave to appear uncovered he is an object of remark. ! Then there is that crease down the ! front Cff the trousers, apparently unI important and unnecessary, but tlio Tyrant has decreed it, so a crease there : inust be! How cruel is Dame Fashion not to permit men to exchange their heavy tweed suits for light attire during the heat of summer; the poor things look so hot and uncomfortable! Oh. yes. men are in bondage, though they hate to admit it. Women, on the other hand, are usually willing slaves, obeying Fashion's vagaries with alacrity, even to the point of physical suffering. “Black stockings are once more to be worn- no longer will society women clothe their legs in light-coloured hose; black silk will now be de rigueur. This news comes from Paris, the recognised home of fashion, bringing welcome relief to eyes weary of the si*"ht of knee-to-ankle light-coloured legs— thick legs, thin legs, ugly legs, occasionally pretty legs, but still legs legs, legs! These have been the most conspicuuous objects on our city pavements for years past until one feels inclined to exclaim. “For goodness sake, give us something else to look The revival of black stockings probably means that skirts will in the ne t j future be longer, but we trust that will not mean a violent reaction from | knee-length to ankle-length: those ! w ho remember the days of long skirts, ! three or four yards in width, will cry ou t against such dictates from Dame * a .All °we ask is moderation, comfort and good taste.
