BEFORE RANGITOTO

AUCKLAND’S ANCIENT HISTORY Reconstructing the Auckland of long ago, in a lecture last night, Professor J. A. Bartrum said that Devonport and Takapuna districts were then separate j islands, and the mainland did not commence before the lower end of Milford Beach. Rangitoto had not then appeared. He described the various steps in the geological formation of the land at present surrounding the Waitemata Harbour and the working of various forces before the volcanic disturbances which had so pronounced an effect on the character of the country. The lecture was excellently illustrated by lantern slides, the most interesting coming from the Takapuna district, which the professor described as a | happy hunting-ground for the geologist. The lecture was the last of the Auck- ; land Institute’s winter series.
