HONOURING WOMAN CHURCH-WORKER
JANET HANCOCK MEMORIAL FUND REACHES £I,OOO The name of Janet Hancock is much loved and honoured by those who knew her in the days when she was superintendent of St. Mary’s Homes, Otahuhu. She was a woman with a loving heart, and intellectual gifts, who devoted herself to the Christ-like task of winning erring girls and restoring them to wholesome, useful lives (says the “Church Gazette”). She was, indeed, a succourer of many who have reason to thank God for her influence. At the time of the great epidemic in 1918 she went to the temporary hospital in Parnell Park to nurse the victims. In a few days’ time she was herself numbered among the victims, and died, as she lived, for others. Some friends desired that a permanent memorial of her self-sacrifice should be established. It was decided not to spend money on a material monument, but to create a fund which would benefit women church workers like herself. The form it should take was to create a fund to provide, or assist in providing, pensions when age or infirmity compels them to retire from active service. This fund was begun in 1919. It has now reached a total of £1,067 Is lid. Archdeacon Mac Murray has handed this sum to the General Trust Board for investment, and a deed has been executed vesting the administration of the revenue in a committee, consisting of the Anglican Bishop, the Archdeacon of Auckland, the Chancellor, the Chairman of the Trust Board, and the Registrar of the Diocese. It is hoped that further gifts will be. made to this object, so as to enable the committee who administer the Janet Hancock Memorial Fund to give substantial help to women who are devoting their lives to the Church s work. , Archdeacon Mac Murray will be glad to give to would-be donors any information they may desire.
