CHEAP-RATE CABLES

REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE RESOLUTIONS Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce resumed today, Mr. D. J. McGowan presiding. It was resolved: "That the Government be urged to use its influence to bring about a modification or removal of the restrictions in cheap-rate cable messages imposed by the Telegraph Convention of *925 ” The opinion of the -conference was that these restrictions hindered the free development of inter-Empire trade. Other motions carried were: "That the Government be urged to establish tourist offices or agencies in other parts of the world, in addition to those already in Australia.” "That the conference makes inquiry as to the likely reception by commercial circles, religious denominations, and by others affected, of the proposal to stabilise the date of Easter.” A remit urging a better general passenger service between Australia and Xew Zealand was lost. Mr. A. H. Mackrell, Invercargill, said that what was wanted was to remove the disabilities under which the South suffered in respect to the service with Australia. The South was not concerned so much with the type of steamers as with a regular service.
