SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY AT ELLERS LIE

T DEAD conditions on Saturday favoured the opening day's racing at ETlerslie of the Thames Jockey Club, and consequently a large crowd was present to witness the keen racing. The totalisat or handled £53,097. as against £l7,'jßo at Thames last year, an increase of £35,617. 'With another successful day's racing in prospect to-day. the visiting club should be well in funds to finance the. extensive improvements now in progress at its own course at Parawai. Notes on Saturday's racing and details of concluding results appear below.

Mangani's Hurdles Slump was withdrawn from the opening event, the Thames Handicap Hurdles, Glenotus £657, Kamehameha £656, Kara mu £549 and Mangani £426 being the best backed. Raliepoto led from the barrier rise, and showed the way past the half mile to Mangani, Karamu, Kendal. Te Tahi, Kamehameha and Glenotus. Rahepoto was still in the van passing the post, following him being Mangani, Kendal, Te Tahi, Karamu and Glenotus. Along the back Rahepoto, Kamehameha and Mangani were running together, and into the straight the order was Mangani, Kamehameha, Rahepoto, Te Tahi, Glenotus, Karamu and Kendal. Mangani and Kamehameha had a good fight to the Judge, the former winning by three-quarters of a length, with Glenotus finishing strongly a neck away. Next to finish were Te Tahi, Rahepoto and Karamu. Kendal fell at the last fence, and his rider, J. Mcßae, received a bruised leg. Two Division Races The Borough Handicap, in two divisions saw 16 contest the first and 17 the second. Most money was forthcoming for the following: Judge’s Box £421. Ash Tray £397, Hone Heke bracket £390 and Rarakau £325. In the first section Bombarder was first away from Flying Tresses, Orchus, Tidal, Ash Tray and Rarakau. Bombarder led past the half mile from Tidal. Flying Tresses, Orchus, Ash Tray, Rarakau and Golden Wedding, the last-named running wide on the turn. It the sti-aight. Bombarder and Rarakau were all over the course, but that did not prevent the latter from scoring easily by a length and a-half from Abbey Day, with Bombarder a n length further back and Ash Tray fourth. Next were Orchus, Flying Tresses, Brampton and San Quin. A wretched start in the second division saw Josie Melville get away quickly, followed by Good Boy, Judge’s Box, Winsome Boy, Creation, Fiery Lad, Subdivision, King, Cullgie, Luxurious and Micrometer, these being strung out. and the rest left at the post. Judge’s Box ran up second at the half mile, Josie Melville leading into the straight from Judge’s Box, Creation, Subdivision, Fiery Lad, Whaka King, Good Boy and Winsome Boy. Judge’s Box did best in the run home to win by tw'o and a-half lengths from Subdivision, with Creation, wide out, a nose away. Josie Melville was fourth, and then came Winsome Boy, Micrometer, Cullgie, Luxurious and King Peg. Nancy Lee’s Sprint seven started in the Flying Handicap, High Finance, £1,476, being heavily backed, with money on hand also for Nancy Lee £1,144, Flying Juliet £1,094, Sir Archie £782 and Nastori £7Ol. High Finance and Nancy Lee began best, being followed by Nastoi’i, Flying Juliet, Gold Acre, Sir Ai*chie and Modest Boy, Dave being the slowest off the mark. At the halfmile High and Nancy Lee were still together in the van, attended by Antrim Boy, Flying Juliet, Sir Archie, Nastori and Gold Acre, the field being strung out. The two leaders were still on terms at the straight entrance, with Antrim Boy and Sir Archie next, and Flying Juliet, Nastori a id Modest Boy heading the remainder. At the distance Nancy Lee had the favourite beaten, and went on to win by two lengths. Vigoi’ous riding enabled High Finance to keep going to stall off the outsider Antrim Boy by a neck for second money, and Flying Juliet and Sir Archie were right up fourth and fifth respectively. Nastori, King Emerald, Automne, Dave, Modest ’Boy and Gold Acre crossed the line in that orderAvon Court's Three On End Eleven started In the Nursery Handicap, tho only defection being Justify. The bracket Avon Court and Nankin Blue £1,495, was a firm favourite, while tliere was money also for Volimond £997, Look Out £794, and Red Lion £736. The public picked them very well. Mon Star dwelt on the mark, The Begum, Coruscate, Valour and Avon Court getting away in a line, closely attended by Look Out, Armenia and Section. At the end of the first furlong Volimond, The Begum and Avon Court were the leaders, and these three came into the straight on terms, followed by Look Out, Coruscate, Valour, Red Lion and Section. At the distance Volimond appeared to have Avon Court beaten, but the latter came again and got the verdict by*a neck. Red Lion was a couple of lengths away, with Valour foui'th. Next were Nankin Blue, Coruscate (who ran very green), The Begum, Look Out, Section and Armenia, with Mon Star tailed off. Mosaic Wins Cup Easily Mint Leaf and Barometer were withdrawn from the Goldfields Cup, leaving 10 runners. Nippy £1,446, Mosaic £1,269, Papatu £1,157, Royal Mint £1,004 and Delightment £741 were best backed. Day Guard and Gala Day were together going cut of the straight, just in front of Delightment, Nippy and Mosaic, with Master Doon, Papatu, Royal Mint, Golden Krist and Pegaway following and Lord Star last. At the seven furlongs Mosaic made a move forward and had a slight advantage passing the five furlongs over Gala Day and Day Guard, with Nippy, Delightment, Master Doon, Papatu. Golden Krist, Royal Mint and Pegaway following. There was little change in the next couple of furlongs, Mosaic piloting the field into the straight, followed by Day Guard, Nippy, Delightment, Gala Day, Papatu, Royal Mint, Master Doon, Golden Krist and Pegaway. Mosaic drew out in the run home and won by a good four lengths. Day Guard holding on to get second money by a length ahead of Master Doon, who finished strongly. Nippy and Royal Mint were together close up behind Master Doon, and then the next to cross the line were Gala Day, Delightment. Papatu, and Golden Krist, Lord Star and Pegaway together whipping in the field. Branson’s Fine Finish Eleven came out for the Thames Valley Handicap, the order of betting favouring In the Shade £1,918, Branson £1,485, and King Smock £947. Siaosi dwelt at the start, Serang going out smartly from Le Choucas. Archibald. Branson, Killute, In the Shade, Nucleus and King Smock. Approaching the

half mile the favourite had run into a good position behind Serang, who still led, following them being Le Choucas, Branson, nucleus, Archibald, Ring Potoa, Killute and Archeno. Into the straight Serang and In the Shade I were on terms, with Le Choucas handy, j and Branson, Nucleus, Archeno and Ring Potoa next. At the furlong post the favourite was doing it well, while Branson, coining along well under punishment, got to him. and in a great finish between the two Branson secured the verdict by a head. Serang was three parts of a length away third, and Le Choucas was a good fourth. There was a big gap back to King Smock, after whom came Archeno, Killute, Nucleus, Ring Potoa, Siaosi and Archibald. Respirator at Last Levenside was a solid favourite for the Puriri Handicap, with Bold Front also in demand. Respirator was first , to become prominent, followed by Star Comet, Whaka King, Baddy’s Girl. Piet, Restaurant, Bold Front and Levenside. At the five furlongs Whaka King had charge from Respirator, Restaurant, Piet, Wyoming, Star Comet, Baddy’s Girl, Frowning Beauty, Levenside and Bold Front. Into the straight Whaka King was still in the van, his closest attendants being Wyoming and Respirator, with Piet, Star Comet, Bold Front and Frowning Beauty following. At the distance the leader compounded, and prominent were Respirator, Piet and Bold Front ,the first two coming away from here, Respirator winning by a head in a tight finish. Bold Front wag two lengths away third, and next in order were Levenside Frowning Beauty, Komak, Daddy s fcirl, Star Comet, Whaka King, Wyoming and Restaurant. Final to Sleepy Soi All started in the Hauraki Plains Handicap, best supported being Ballymoy 11, £2,074, Mint Leaf, £1,54e, Quincoma, £1,005 and, Sleepy Sol, £919. A fine start saw Ballymoy 11. the first to show out from Harbour View, Arch Queen, Sleepy Sol, Quincoma, Mint Leaf, and Thursby. At the five furlongs the imported mare was still making the running, her immediate followers being Sleepy Sol, Arch Queen, Phaola, Mint Leaf, and Quincoma, Harbour View dropping right back to last very quickly. Sleepy Sol and Ballymoy 11. were together into the straight, three lengths ahead of Phalo and Mint Leaf, with Quincoma, Eh Timi, and Arch Queen following. A fine finish saw Sleepy Sol win from the favourite by a neck, with Phaola finishing well a v clear length away.
