DARGAVILLE NEWS

EXPERIMENTAL FARMING It is hard to realise that in the short space of two seasons such improvement could be made on a farm as that which has been achieved on the Northern Wai.roa Experimental and Demonstration Farm at Dargaville. The dairy herd was wintered on the farm for the first time, and farmers present at the “field day” last Thursday freely commented on the excellent condition in which they found the herd. The farm is now entering on its third season, and the .returns from the herd of 35 should make interesting reading. The attendance at the field day was one of the largest since its inception, close on 100 farmers attending from all parts of the district. CATHOLIC BAZAAR Great preparations are being made for the Catholic Bazaar and Queen Carnival, to bo held next Saturday. There are four queens, representing Dargaville, Ruawai, Onetea and Pukehuia. At present the Ruawai queen is leading, but as all the committees are working hard the final result is difficult to forecast. CYCLING ACCIDENT When cycling to work recently Mr. C. Carey, junr., met with a slight accident. The front fork of his bicycle broke, and in falling his right cheek was badly cut just below the cheekbone. After receiving medical attention he was, however, able to proceed to work. HIBERNIAN ANNIVERSARY The anniversary social of the Dargaville branch of the H.A.C.B.S. was held on Monday nighty and was a great success. The Hibernian Hall was filled with a happy crowd of dancers. The colours of the ladies’ dresses mingled with the regalia worn by representatives of all the friendly societies, making an animated picture. Splendid music was supplied by Miss Kelly’s orchestra, and those who did not dance were entertained in the club room at a “500 card evening.” A sumptuous supper was provided by lady friends of the Hibernian Lodge and dancing was continued after supper into the early hours of Tuesday morning. Mr. Leo. Stanaway filled the position of M.C. in a very efficient manner, and much of the success of the function was due to his efforts.
