MAIL-BAG THEFT
CASE AGAINST FOSTER ACCUSED SUDDENLY RICH By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.8 a.m. LONDON, Friday. In connection with the trial of Joseph Foster, who was brought back from New Zealand to answer a charge of stealing a mailTjag containing £IO,OOO between Cardiff and London, the prosecution said that Foster until the robbery was “hard up,” living at Merthyrtydvil, where he owed the Guardians £2O for the support of his wife and child.
The day after the robbery he disappeared and said that an Australian relative had bequeathed him some money, which he was going out to get. He paid the Guardians £5, and meanwhile opened an account in a London bank, depositing £I,OOO in the name of Roberts. He used the alias of Thomas in a London hotel. Witnesses identified him as a traveller on the train when the robbery was committed.
According to the prosecution, Foster was claiming that he had a successful day at the races. He got a bookmaker named Chandler to exchange some £IOO treasury notes for bank notes. Chandler paid in the missing treasury notes. —A. and N.Z.
