Chinese In Retreat Set Big City Afire
MUCH STREET-FIGHTING STUBBORN BATTLE By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.30 a.m. SHANGHAI, Friday. Japanese advices state that General Chang-tso-lin’s forces attacked Chochow, a large city in Northern Shansi. Troops rushed into the walled town, after breaking in the gates. They were met by a stubborn reception from the Shansi men, and there was fierce street-fighting. Victory rested at last with the attackers. Many civilians were killed. The defeated troops fired the city, which is reported to be blazing furiously still.—A. and N.Z.
