SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT AT REMUERA
A delightful and picturesque entertainment was given last evening in St. Mark’s Hall by the pupils of the Ladies’ College, Remuera, under the direction of Mrs. Moncrieff McCallum and Miss Daphne Knight. The selected items of the first part of the programme were admirably performed. Miss Tess Lloyd’s impersonation of “Pussey” was excellent, and called forth much applause.
A little tableau and recitation, enitled “Granny’s Picture,” was an interesting and original item. Miss Sarah Stacpoole delighted the audience with her splendid voice, and gave as an encore to “I Passed by Your Window,” “The Birth of Morn.”
Little Miss Peggy Walker recited “Sixpence” very charmingly, and the Misses Williams and Hoffman opened the performance with a brilliant pianoforte duet.
A play, entitled “Borrowed Plumes, was acted, the costumes being ar
ranged by Mrs. W. Kelly and the dances by Miss Daphne Knight.
The first scene was held in the throne room of the palace, where the marriage of the princess (Miss S. Stacpoole) was arranged by the king (Miss Lascelles Corrigan) and Queen Joanna (Miss Sybil Bonner).
Scene two was held in the cave of the witches, with its eerie lighting effects, and its large stew pot over a glowing fire. Here a weird dance was given by the witches (Misses Winstone, Bruce and Mannering) - . Other parts were taken by Miss Agnes O’Reilly and Miss Nina Churchward.
A jewellery novelty is the landscape brooch specially designed for the sports sweater or pull-over. It is worn at the side, just below the shoulder, where once the monogram appeared. A lovely gem in coloured enamels is one favoured mode in the new brooch category. It may be set in silver, or maybe a line of plain black enamel, this last being wonderfully effective.
Yet another jewellery notion is an eighteenth-century revival; the ribbon wristlet with a tiny miniature painting inset, in a paste or enamel frame. This replaces the jewelled wrist-watch.
