A SCANDAL
CHURCHMAN’S GRIEVANCE STATE OF HISTORIC CHURCH A churchman with a grievance came into THE SUN office this morning. Though he comes from Canterbury he is full of a “great scandal to the discredit of Auckland Anglicans.” The scandal concerns the state of the churchyard at St. Thomas’s. Tamaki, and the old mission buildings at Kohimarama. “The way the old graves and tombs have been desecrated reflects little reference for the memory of Bishop Selwyn," said Mr. A. T. Stokes, an old resident of Christchurch, who entered the protest. “Even the inside of the church has been used for making picnic fires. Anglicans ought to be ashamed of themselves for allowing an historic place to fall into such an evil state. “Another standing scandal for the community is the mission building. Vandals have raked up the floor and stripped the lining from the walls. If something is not done now, the place will be stripped bare, and the Synod’s £2OO will be useless to restore it.” he said.
