The dead men are a notorious character, “Squizzy” (Leslie) Taylor, and John Cutmore. The wounded woman is Mrs. Cutmore, senr. Two other men who were concerned in the shooting have disappeared. It is stated that Taylor and two other men drove a motor-car to the house in Carlton occupied by Mrs. Cutmore and her son John. Taylor, accompanied by one companion, entered the house and walked into a bedroom where John Cutmore lay ill in bed. Without speaking, one of the intruders fired point-blank at Cutmore. The latter returned the fire from his bed, and for several minutes a deadly duel was fought in the dimly-lighted room. Hearing the shots, Mrs. Cutmore rushed into the room. As soon as she entered she fell to the floor with a bullet In one shoulder. A few minutes later Taylor staggered to the front door to the car and was driven to a hospital, but he was dead on arrival there.
