Th'fe' armiek in the Yangtse Valley are gradually drawing closer, and in the meantime are firing on foreign warships and merchantmen, several direct hits being recorded. A United States destroyer was struck amidships with a four-inch shell and she replied with 100 rounds, demolishing the enemy forts. An unconfirmed report states that a second United States destroyer was attacked by artillery and machineguns and sustained several casualties. Local American authorities are reticent, though they admit that several of their vessels were attacked, but they refused to give details. Ten youthful Chinese students, including a girl, were executed at Peking military headquarters for plotting disturbances in the capital to harass the rear of the armies, which were defending the recent ’ Shansi attack on Hankow and Nanking.—A. and N.Z.
