SYDNEY CHAMPION

BIG EVENT DECIDED NEW STAR IN FIELD The Sydney champion of champions event, contested by the champions of all the clubs —metropolitan and suburban —was played at Killara a few weeks ago. Practically all the eligible players competed, the only noticeable absentee being R. K. Lee Brown, of the Australian Club. “No one could be but pleased at J. Macqueen winning,” says an Australian writer. “He is 23 years of age, not tall, but with a splendid pair of shoulders, which he uses to admirable effect, and gets a very long ball. His putting is also very sound. There can be no doubt that in the near future ho will take championship honours, but he and S. Keane, his clubmate, have to encounter many difficulties when playing on long courses, for

Cammeray is very short. Keane, for instance, has never used a brassie for his second shot for some nine months, and this must make it difficult to compete on level terms with men who play at Rose Bay, Kensington, Manly and other courses. ‘lt makes Macqueen’s win all the more meritorious when it is considered that he was competing against experienced, and brilliant like E. L. Apperly, the State champion, and F. G. Murdoch, Royal Sydney champion. The latter started badly with an S2, but in the afternpon had the best round of the day with 75, which was spoilt by a 6 at the eighth. The event was decided on two stroke rounds, and the cards were: J. Macqueen, Cammeray, 78 —76, 154; E. L. Apperly, Manly, 77 —79 —156; F. G. Murdoch, Royal Sydney, 82—75 157; G. E. Dennett, Bonnie Doon, 78— 81—159; C. Glancey, Concord, 76 —84 —’ 160; A. M. Stain, Moore Park, 88 —76 — 164; R. J. Withy combe, Killara, 81 — 86 —167; J. Hughes, Roseville, 85— 84—169; F. W. Hawe, Cronulla, 88— 83—171; R. Piasto, Pymble, 87 —89 — 176; C. L. O'Sullivan, Mosman, 90— 86—176.
