New Maori Girls’ College.—The foundation-stone of the new Presbyterian Maori Girls’ College at Marton was laid by the Governor-Genera! this afternoon. A large number of Maoris were presen at the ceremony. Governor-General To Open Hall.— The 75th aniversary of the Beresford Street Congregational Church on Saturday will be marked by the opening of the new school hall by the Governor - General. Flax-millers’ Conference.—lt is probable that a general discussion will take place between flax millers and the Department of Agriculture at an early date in reference to the recent gradings. It is believed that the standard fixed is too high.—Press Association. Cripple Fined £3o.—John Milne, cripple, pleaded guilty at the Dunedin Police Court yesterday to having carried on business as a bookmaker, the offence having taken place on Labour Day. He was fined £3O. —Press Association. Injured Man Improving.—An improvement is reported in the condition of Mr. Arthur Roberts, of Arnold Street, Rocky Nook, who injured through being knocked down by a tramcar outside the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. An operation was performed shortly after his admission. Fire In Annexe. —Slight damage was done to one of three rooms in an annexe of the Pelle Vista boardinghou at 7 Lower Symonds Street, shortly after 10 o’clock last evening. The fire was easily extinguished by the City Brigade. The building is owned by Mrs. R. Barker and occupied by Miss I. Johnstone. Fatal Fall From Scaffolding.—Jeremiah Kelleher, aged 38. employed at the Wellington Company’s gasworks at Miramar, fell from the scaffold surrounding a chimney, which was being demolished. He was killed instantaneously. It is thought that he overbalanced, there being no wind at the time. —Press Association. Newspapers Charged.—Three Christchurch newspapers were charged yes- ; terday with publishing cross-word puzzle advertisements which, the police said, were games of chance. The magistrate reserved judgment. It appeared, he said, that the cases must fail on the ground that the place did ‘ not appear in the advertisements. — Press Association.
