GUY MCKINNEY’S GOOD RECORDS

TROTTER’S BIG EFFORT JOINING TWO-MINUTE LIST The Grand Circuit meeting held under the auspices of the Indiana, U.S.A., State Fair had a banner day on September 19, for no fewer than eight races were decided and 21 heats were contested. To horsemen particularly the performance of Guy McKinney, who started to reduce his three-year-old record of 2.4i£, made during his undefeated campaign of 1926, his mile in 2.1 bore an important significance, fo.r it heralded the advent of a 2min four-year-old trotter. TRACK IN GOOD FORM The track was at its best, and T. Berry had % in mind in driving his charge only a moderate mile, for he had not worked the colt faster than 2.3, that being several weeks previ-

ously. On September 9 Guy McKinney covered a mile in 2.5 over the cinder track at Syracuse, but this was not calculated to key the colt up for a supreme effort. His trainer thought that if the colt registered 2.2 at the Indiana Fair it would be all that could be expected of him. “However,” with a pair of running pacemakers to accompany him in 29§, the half-mile in 1.01. the three-quarters in 1.31, and coming the home quarter in 30sec, finished strong in 2.1. REMARKABLE SPEED The usual stress which accompanies the last strides of a fast exhibition mile were absent in Guy McKinney's effort, and he completed the mile at high speed, without being strenuously urged. That he will join Arion Guy 1.591, and Mr. McElwyn 1.591 (four-year-old record 1.591) as members of the 2min list, is almost a surety, and that he has better than an even chance of reducing the record for the age seems a strong probability.
