“MONS”
COMING TO THE STRAND One of the most outstanding events in the history of the Strand Theatre will be the screening of the greatest picture England has ever produced, “Mons,” which immortalises the greatest feat of arms in British history. When “Mons,” the celebrated British film which relates the story of “the immortal retreat,” was first shown in London, it created unprecedented enthusiasm. It is related that people stood in long queues for hours seekingadmission. The “Daily Mirror” writes as follows: “The enthusiasm of the people was unbounded. All sorts and conditions of men and women were represented at the screenings. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales attended on three occasions.” The first screening of
“Mons,” will take place at the Strand Theatre to-morrow, Thursday, and judging by the heavj r demand for reserved seats, “Mons” is destined to achieve a big success in this Dominion. Eve Bentley has compiled the music score for the Strand Symphony Orchestra, in addition to the particularly stirring patriotic overture. Gunner A. G. Jenkins, R.H.A., who will personally appear in a foreword to the film, holds the distinction of having fired the first shot in the war. Although the toll taken of the Old Contemptibles was terrific, Gunner Jenkins, together with the two horses that led the gun from which he fired the first shot into action, came through the entire term of the war without a scratch. The same gun and the pair of horses were used in connection with the burial of the Unknown‘Soldier at ■Westminster Abbey.
A strong programme has been arranged in support of the feature picture. So popular were the “Famous Parisian Dances” which were being screened during the current programme, that the management has arranged for a second series, “Cabarets of Paris,” in which some of the most popular in Paris are displayed. Then there is a Strand Magazine, composed of the latest world news, and topical events, a screamingly funny Aesop Fable cartoon and a hilarious comedy.
