NORTH CANTERBURY RACING FIXTURE

WINIKY WEATHER SPOILS SPORT AT RANGIORA (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. THE North Canterbury Racing Club held its annual meeting at Rangiora in rainy weather. Prior to the commencement of the first race there was a light fall of snow, followed by heavy rain. The attendance was poor and as a result of the weather conditions the track was heavy. The sum of £9,102 was put through the machine, compared with £17,872 10s last year, when the fixture was held at Riccarton. FAVOURITE SCORES EASILY Proceedings opened with the Highweight Handicap, and on the strength of a good gallop at Riccarton on Saturday morning, Luminant was made favourite. She was always in a handy position, and once in the straight came away to score an easy win from the Nassau gelding Shandre. Beaming soon took up the running, and led along the back from Rigel, Shandre. Luminant and Armchair. Luminant ran into the lead crossing the top and led into the straight from Beaming, with Shandre coming through fast. Luminant held her own in the run to the judge, to win in comfortable style by a length from Shandre, with No Response, who finished fast, a head away third. Beaming was fourth, while Gay Bird and The Harp headed the remainder. Luminant, who is a half-sister to Manyskittle, is still very green, but she will be improved by experience. She claims an engagement in the New Zealand Oaks to be run at Riccarton next month. ROTOR WINS WELL Malmsley Miss Trillion and Rotor were solidly supported for the Trial Plate. Miss Trillion and Rotor were quickest to begin and Miss Trillion led across the top, but Rotor went to the front before the straight entrance was reached, and won easily by a. length and a-half from Malmsley, who finished w§ll. Miss Trillion was a similar distance away third, followed by Evening. FRONT RANK’S CUP There was spirited betting on the Rangiora Cup, and Assurance wound up favourite in a good betting race. Solferite was the first to break the line and led past the stands from Margaret Birney, Front Rank, Ophir, Nincompoop and Assurance, with Countersign last. The order passing the seven-fur-longs was much the same, but along the back Countersign improved her position. Solferite, who appeared to be travelling easily, was still in charge across the top, but turning for home Front Rank ran into second place. A furlong from home Solferite looked a winner, but Front Rank finished well, and defeated the Solferino gelding by a neck. Margaret Birney was four lengths away third, followed by Ophir, Assurance, Nincompoop and Countersign. Nincompoop ran a good race for a mile, but then faded out. Front Rank, who is owned by Sir George Clifford, battled out the finish in game style, and should be improved by the race. Her victory was a popular one. Solferite just failed in the last few strides. MOORLAND WINS COMFORTABLY Paperchase, Sagittarius and Moorland was the order of favouritism for the Flying Handicap. Arrowmir was slow to begin, but after going two furlongs ran up into second place behind Sagittarius. Paperchase ran up to the leaders entering the straight, and though she looked a winner a furlong from home she could not withstand the challenge of Moorland, who drew away at the end to win comfortably by a length and a-half. Sagittarius was a length away third, followed by Arrowmir. SUDDEN STORM’S GREAT FLASH Sudden-. Storm was left, fully ten lengths at the post in the Oxford Hack Handicap, but she displayed phenomenal speed once she got going, and showing wonderful tenacity in the straight she just managed to get up in time to defeat Jarrietiere by a short head. Grey Wells was three lengths away third. Sudden Storm, who is a l‘uil-sister to the Wellesley Stakes winner, Childsplay, put up a remarkable performance and was accorded an ovation on returning to scale. Mime was badly left in the Fernside Handicap. Kenmore was the early leader from Thorndale, Flaming Ray and Gold Brick, and led across the top and into the straight from Thorndale and Moratorium, but in the run home Thorndale finished best and won by three-quarters of a length from Moratorium, who was two lengths away third. Thorndale is at his best at present, and he will have to be reckoned with in future events. Later results: OXFORD HACK HANDICAP Of £160; 6 Furlongs. 1 — SUDDEN STORM, 7.12 (C.
