WEEK-END WEATHER LEADS TO ARREST
HOTEL V SPORTS (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. A plea of guilty was entered by John Cameron Ross, aged 25, when charged before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., at Hamilton to-day with being found intoxicated while in charge of a motorcar. It was stated that at 1.10 p.m. on Monday he was found-drunk in charge of the car in Victoria Street, with two of his companions trying to get him out. Defendant admitted having had four bottles of beer and would have been arrested for drunkenness in any case. Mr. L. Tompkins, who appeared for the accused, stated that he came down from Auckland for the week-end, but owing to unpropitious weather he adjourned to the hotel instead of the sports gathering as intended. He mingled with the hptel crowd, and because of cold, took whisky with beer afterwards. That probably contributed to his state. Leniency from the bench was sought on account of accused’s occupation as a confectionery traveller, which would be prejudiced if his licence were cancelled. Mr. Wilson: I require to know more than has been told by his solicitor. Accused’s actions are certainly not very creditable. It is really a question whether his driver’s licence should be cancelled or merely a monetary fine inflicted. Accused was remanded until Friday lor sentence, bail being allowed in a surety of £2O. Application for the suppression of his name was made but refused.
