ROWING
AT WEST END
NEW COURSE SATISFACTORY West End’s opening - flutter on Saturday was largely notable because it was responsible for the successful tryingout of the new course set out by Captain H. H. Sergeant, the club’s enthusiastic president. Following the boat harbour wall, the course is a full mile in length, and after a turn near the baths affords a fine straight quarter-mile for the sprint homo and glory. Four crews turned out on Saturday to dispute possession of the trophies presented by Mr. K. L. Stewart, vice-president. O. Felton met J. llaylock in the first heat, and after level pegging for the first furlong Felton assumed a lead, which Haylock could not reduce. In, the second heat Bloxham met , C». Dowling, the latter’s crew being a solid set, in which S. Hadley, the All "Black Kugby player, appeared at two. Dowling led at the home turn. and was able to stall off a determined challenge by his opponent. The final between Dowling and Felton was a good race for the major part of the distance. The crews raced together until the final turn when Dowling quickened his beat, the weight in his boat helping him to go on for a win by three lengths.
