“BEATEN, BUT UNSHAMED”

GIRL’S CHANNEL SWIM

COURAGEOUS EFFORT FAILS My Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Saturday. Miss Mercedes Gleitze failed in her attempt to swim the English Channel, but her courageous attempt to vindicate her honour following the Logan hoax has aroused the admiration and sympathy of everyone. The water was cold (56deg.), and hreakene rolled heavily, but the swimmer was cheerful, and, refusing to swim under the lee of the boat, called for a tune from two musicians aboard. These were too seasick to comply, but journalists sang popular longs. Miss Gieitze was blue with cold when the strong flood-tide that had favoured her gave place to an ebbtide, which she could not resist. After an hour her trainer suggested that she should give up. Three-quarters of an hour later steps were lowered from the boat, but she swam away, and did not give up the attempt till the trainer and pilot lassooed her and pulled her aboard, amid a burst of cheering. “I have failed, but I am not ashamed,*’ she said. "From the first moment I entered the water I felt cold, but I was not going to give myself away. I was taken out of the water against my will, and I could have continued longer.”—A. and N.Z.
