“MONS”
STRAND ON THURSDAY
“Mons,” which will be screened at the Strand Theatre on Thursday, vividly recreates the intematibnal tension, the lightning like succession of dramatic State events that occurred throughout those early August days of 1914. Most effectively does the picture in these opening stages take the memory back, tugging the very heartstrings with a mysterious sense of adventure mingled with deepest anxiety. We see Article VII. of the Hague Convention scornfully derided and the grey hordes of the enemy advance into neutral territory, calling for the fateful British Cabinet meeting at which Sir Edward Grey declared that Britain could not honourably let another hour pass without declaring war! —The shock to the nation!
From the imperative Cabinet decision, the picture shows Britain plunging into the mobilisation of 50,000 men, their hurried embarkation for France, and the first shots of the immortal campaign.
