FIRES IN N.S.W. TOWNS.—Fi re destroyed Leekie’s timber yard -in Summerhill and four adjoining residences. The damage is estimated at £15,000. A fire in Ganmain gutted four shops in the centre of the town, causing extensive damage.—A. and N.Z. WATCH ON RHINE. —The withdrawal of 6.500 French, 1,000 British and 500 Belgian troops from the Rhineland is now practically completed. This will reduce the Allied occupational force to 60,000. —A. and N.Z. FRENCH SOCIALISTS.—The Permanent Administrative Committee of the French Socialist Party refused authority to members to go to Russia to take part in the celebration of the anniversary of the revolution.—A. and N.Z. APPEAL AGAINST POLL.—Mr. Bate, the Labour candidate in the Paddington electroate, of New South Wales, has appealed against the election of Mr. Levy, a former Speaker, on the grounds that many voting irregularities occurred with regard to postal votes.—A. and N.Z. HURUNTI SAILS.—The imprisoned orew of the steamer Hurunui at Newcastle abandoned their previous attitude that they would not sail while the present chief engineer was aboard, and were released, being escorted to the vessel, which has sailed.—A. and N.Z.
